5 Hottest Shopping Items in 2014 - Electronics and Technology

The Techie 2014 Holiday Shopping Guide

When it comes to holiday shopping, there are a lot of gizmos and gadgets out there for those who love to get their hands on new technology, but when it comes to actually purchasing that techie the perfect gift for the holidays and you have a question, there is never a salesman in sight. So today, we're going to take a look at the top gifts of this holiday season so you can make up your mind and get your questions answered before you go into the store!

1) Kindle Fire

One of the top selling gifts this year is the Kindle Fire. Retailing at just $199, the Kindle Fire makes a tempting option for those who are looking for an affordable tablet PC that comes with many favorite options, but do not want to spring for the fully armed iPad 2. For instance, the Kindle Fire does not include a camera for video chat, does not come with a 3G option, and comes with only 8 GB of storage. However, to its advantage, it does have access to Amazon's Cloud storage, though I'm not a big fan of purchased content on someone else's server myself. With a 7" screen size, crystal clear screen, and access to a huge library of content through Amazon's web-based services, the Kindle Fire is a great gift this year for someone looking for a tablet PC. Xbox 360 with Kinect

When it comes to a video gaming platform, Microsoft has stepped up their game when it comes to the Xbox 360 by adding Kinect to the Xbox package. With Kinect, all traditional controllers are eliminated, being replaced by full body gaming - essentially you are the controller. The camera in the Kinect tracks your every movement with negligible lag time, making video games more interactive. For the family that likes to play games, this could very well be the perfect gift. For $149 during the holiday season, you get the Kinect and three Kinect games, but that price is only for those who already have the gaming platform.

If you need to purchase an Xbox 360 in addition to the Kinect, then look for one of Microsoft's bundle packages. You can pick up a 4GB console with the Kinect and a game for under $300, but if your family is like my family, we store a lot of movies, games, music, and pictures on our gaming console. If that's you, then you need to spend an extra $100 and purchase the full console package. For $399, you get a 250GB console with the Kinect and a game.

Garmin Nuvi 650

When it comes to GPS systems, not all systems are created equally, unfortunately, and if you only want to spend a few bucks on a system, you are bound to be disappointed with the results. However, if you are in the market to purchase a GPS system as a gift, then you have to look no father than the Garmin Nuvi 650 to give the perfect gift. Though you can get less powerful versions of the Nuvi, the 650 is the way to go not only because of its preprogrammed 6 million points of interest, but because of the plethora of additional features. You can program in your own points of interest into the 650 so you can see exactly what you want to see while on vacation without getting lost. The 650 comes with a MP3 player so that you can play music or an audio book while on the go. The 650 even comes with currency converters and the ability to display personal photographs. With prices starting at just $350, you can't go wrong with this great GPS system.

Netflix and Hulu Plus

The future of television and movies is not in DVDs or Blu-Rays - no, the future is in online streaming. Even though Netflix has taken a beating when it comes to their corporate business decisions this year, a gift subscription to Netflix has great value. With access to tens of thousands of television shows and movies, there is more content available to stream than there are hours in the entire year. From science fiction to action to romance to even past seasons of current television shows, Netflix always has something on to watch, and better yet, you can give someone access to all their content for an entire year for just $96.

If you want to watch current episodes of television shows, then Hulu Plus is the right subscription for you. With every episode of the current season of a show available plus several past seasons, you almost don't need a cable subscription any more. Hulu Plus also offers the complete televisions series of many older shows and offers access to thousands of different movies. Also just $96 for an entire year of access, a gift to Hulu Plus or to Netflix is a gift that keeps on giving all year 'round.

Apple iPhone 5S

When you think "smartphone," you think of the iPhone. Part of this is because of Apple's marketing abilities, part of this is because of the ability to integrate iTunes and all the different applications from their app store, but part of this is also because the iPhone 5S is also one of the best phones out there. Though price is certainly somewhat prohibitive at $199 on a 2 year contract or $399 without a contract, you do certainly get a lot of phone for your buck. From video chatting to streaming music and videos, the iPhone 4S does it all well, even if just on a 3G network. Add the 8MP camera and the voice controlled personal assistant named Siri on the iOS 5 platform, and you've got a great gift for someone who loves smartphones.

65" LCD TV

When it comes to a television purchase, you really have to be careful as to what kind of television you are purchasing. Cheaper does not equate to better, because cheaper usually means you are purchasing a 720p TV over a 1080p one. Today's televisions also need multiple HDMI hookups for gaming consoles and Blu-Ray players, computer integration, and if it's your thing, graphic card slots to show your pictures and home videos. Taking all of that into consideration, you can only come up with 1 TV - the Samsung 65" LCD TV.

The Samsung comes in full HD, which is 1080p, and has 3 HDMI ports so you can watch high definition television, play high definition gaming, and plug in your Blu-Ray player without any additional adaptors. The Samsung also comes with a USB port and a VGA input so it is fully compatible with your laptop or home computer. And at just 10.4" deep, it is thin enough to be placed virtually anywhere in your home for your viewing pleasure.

So that's a quick look at the hot gifts this year for that techie in your home. Whether it is a new television, a new smartphone, or just a subscription to their favorite streaming service, we hope that this has helped you find that perfect gift this holiday season.
